Desiraé's all-volunteer campaign team is made up of longtime Ypsi residents with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.

Heather with Desirae
Heather Martin — Campaign Manager
Heather has called Ypsilanti home since 2008. She is the Founding Director of Youth Arts Alliance and mother to 6 year old Finn. You can find Heather and Finn riding their bikes, exploring local parks and shopping at the Ypsi Farmer’s Market most Saturdays. Heather knows first-hand the tireless work and embodied values Desiraé Simmons puts forward for an equitable, healthy and happy Ypsilanti.
Portrait of Joe
Joe Montgomery — Treasurer
Joe (he/him) is a (nearly) lifelong resident of Ypsilanti, and Dez's next-door neighbor! Now a writing and communication teacher at the University of Michigan, he has in the past taught at Washtenaw Community College and Eastern Michigan University and has worked as a union organizer for the EMU Federation of Teachers, as a barista at B-24's Coffee Shop, and as many things at the Ypsilanti Food Co-op. He has two children in Ypsilanti Community Schools and commutes to work every day by bike and bus.
Amber holding a goat
Amber Fellows — Campaign Coordination
Amber (any/all) got their start in Ypsi in 2003, first timidly checking out the small but dedicated dj night at the Elbow Room and making friends with vegetables at the Ypsi Food Co-op. Nearly twenty years and two ousted mayors later, Amber spends their time exploring trees in Ypsi’s east side parks and neighborhoods, performing at our downtown venues, and keeping up with town gossip through their fav political nerd clubs.

Other people who have made this campaign possible

Marcy Davy Haywood
Marcy designed pretty much everything for this campaign in 2018. The buttons, the logo, the yard sign, Marcy made them all. She made this campaign beautiful in a way that no one else could. Tragically, Marcy passed away in early 2020, at the age of 39. Through her art, she left a lasting mark on this community. We honor her legacy and think of her every single time we see her work.

Darlene Ladson-Barbosa
Darlene served as the treasurer for Desirae's 2018 campaign, and she is now an unofficial campaign advisor. She is a retired, disabled Marine Corps veteran, and she is Desiraé's mother. Her wisdom and experience is invaluable to us. She lives in Ypsilanti Township.
